A transformative aspect of Yoga is self-study—taking time to understand yourself so you can cultivate greater self-acceptance and extend that same understanding to others. One powerful way to do this is through journaling.

Journaling doesn’t require anything fancy—just a notebook, a pen, and a willingness to explore your thoughts and emotions. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. You might write about your day, emotions that are stirring, or simply check in with yourself—physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually, or socially.

This practice is for you. There’s no need to edit, write in complete sentences, or even re-read what you wrote. Let it be uncensored, a space to release emotions without judgment. So often, we get caught in loops of overthinking, replaying worries or frustrations over and over. Writing them down allows you to process them, recognize patterns, and gain clarity.

There are various styles or practices for journaling. Some people prefer structured prompts, while others might enjoy free writing, gratitude journaling, or even doodling as a form of self-expression. Explore various styles and see what feels good for you. You may find that you enjoy a mix of styles depending on your mood, what's going on, or the time that you are writing.

Journaling has many benefits—it acknowledges your experiences, emotions, and thoughts, offering a path to awareness and acceptance. Sometimes, it helps lighten the mental and emotional load you’ve been carrying. Other times, it reveals the next step forward. Either way, there is healing and growth in journaling.

Need a place to start? Try these journal prompts:

  • What do I want from my Yoga practice?
  • What are my core values?
  • What are my favorite ways to rest?
  • How can I offer myself the same kindness I extend to others?
  • What relationship would I like to strengthen?
  • What is holding me back from the relationships I desire?
  • What commitments feel like a “have-to” but don’t bring me joy or align with my priorities?
