Have you ever noticed how your breath changes when you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed? It may become shallow, quick, or even feel stuck. But one of the most powerful (and accessible!) ways to create calm in the moment is by intentionally slowing down your breath.

In Yoga, breath awareness is key to grounding yourself, releasing tension, and bringing your body and mind back into balance. The best part? You don’t need a yoga mat or a quiet room—just a few intentional breaths can shift your entire state of being.

A Simple Breathwork Practice for Calm

The next time you feel your thoughts racing or stress creeping in, try this:

  1. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose.

  2. Pause gently at the top of your inhale.

  3. Exhale slowly through your mouth, releasing tension as you breathe out.

  4. Pause again before taking your next inhale.

  5. Repeat this cycle a few times, allowing your breath to lengthen and deepen.

To take it a step further, pair your breath with a simple affirmation. As you inhale, silently say to yourself: “I am enough just as I am.” As you exhale, remind yourself: “Everything will be okay.” This combination of breath and words helps quiet racing thoughts and anchors you in the present moment.

Using Breathwork Throughout Your Day

Deep breathing isn’t just for meditation—it’s a tool you can use anytime, anywhere:

  • During stressful moments – Whether you're stuck in traffic, handling a difficult conversation, or feeling overwhelmed, a few slow breaths can bring immediate relief.

  • For smoother transitions – Before stepping into a meeting, coming home from work, or starting a new task, take five deep breaths to reset your energy and be fully present.

  • As a mindfulness check-in – Throughout the day, pause and ask yourself: How does my body feel? How is my breath? Then, take a few intentional breaths to realign with calm.

Breathwork is a simple yet profound practice that weaves mindfulness into daily life. If you’d like a guided experience, I invite you to check out my Short Breathwork Practice to Feel More Calm on YouTube.
